As parts of the country devolve into authoritarian, anti-democratic states, Massachusetts — for all its faults — has managed to avoid it. So far.
One reason is the large number of local organizations that are working hard to keep the lights of kindness and democracy burning:
The NAACP New Bedford Branch has been working for over a century to improve the lives and prospects of people of color in the greater New Bedford community. They are holding their annual Freedom Fund Breakfast on June 3rd. I believe there are still tickets. Email Bert Barao for more information.
Since 1994 the Coalition for Social Justice has fought to improve economic conditions for working people throughout the SouthCoast and the state. they have been involved in campaigns for better childcare, family leave, tax policy, green justice, public transit, immigration, and criminal justice. They are one of a few organizations who rely on volunteers to do phone banking, canvassing, and community organizing.
The SouthCoast LGBTQ+ Network is dedicated to building and maintaining a comprehensive support network for LGBTQ+ individuals and families across the age spectrum, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable within the LGBTQ+ community. On June 3rd, from 11am-4pm, the Network is sponsoring the 2023 Pride celebration in Buttonwood Park, New Bedford. Be there to support your friends and family.
The Dartmouth Democratic Town Committee (DDTC) is actively working to push back on the GOP’s anti-democratic efforts and to support progressive organizations who share the MassDems' vision for a Commonwealth for all its citizens. The DDTC is actively working to recruit new members and to bring a full delegation to the September party convention. For more information, contact Jim Griffith.
I don't mean to slight the Immigrant's Assistance Center, the CEDC, the YWCA — or the many dozens of others — who on a daily basis are improving the lives of SouthCoast residents and protecting the most vulnerable among us.
But if you are concerned about the frightening, cruel, rightward drift of American politics and government — then do something about it!
