Come meet Tanisha Sullivan at the Greater New Bedford Labor Council on Saturday, March 26th, at 5:00 pm.
The NAACP has been on the right side of most fights for social, economic, and racial justice in America since its establishment in 1909. Full disclosure: I am a member of the NAACP New Bedford branch, and we are taking new memberships. :)
Tanisha Sullivan is known to many of us as the long-time president of the Boston NAACP -- the first chartered branch of the organization. In this role Sullivan advised and advocated to Boston and the Commonwealth on issues from police reform to vaccine equity. She is an attorney and former Equity Officer for the Boston Public Schools. You can find more information about her on her campaign website.
Sullivan has thrown her hat into the race for Massachusetts Secretary of State, a job that has everything to do with voting, an area of special concern as other states have begun to systematically purge voter rolls, shrink voting options, and intimidate voters at the polls with "election police."
While many Democrats may find little fault with incumbent Bill Galvin, I think Sullivan's focus will be to bring real passion for voter engagement to the office. Sullivan also brings new energy (she is 47 while Bill Galvin is my age, 71). And after the Democratic-led Massachusetts Legislature recently failed to expand voter options, a new Secretary of State with a genuine commitment to civic engagement would be a breath of fresh air.
